A HOWKINS PLOUGH PLANE
Special grooving plane, planes to the right.

Cast block, sole 4 mm thick, 130 mm long, 36 mm wide, with an open cutout on the right for the blade (35×14 mm). On the sole’s left side stands a 4 mm wall, 5 mm thick, with two triangular side supports.

At the front center is a 1 mm recess that extends left by 30 mm and right by 25 mm, 4 mm deep, to reduce the outer edges by 25 mm near the handle area (40×22 mm). Behind it is a crosspiece (22 mm wide, 15 mm thick) for the iron’s screw. The iron holder is angled 3° from the vertical. A 10 mm threaded rod (DIN 13/14, 1.5 pitch) with a 16 mm nut is cast into the block. An M10 wing nut (Whitworth 55°–18G) locks the blade in place, along with a 4 mm thick brass washer (⌀ 18 mm). A 20×25 mm steel bracket with two 4 mm screws attaches behind the iron as a wedge support. In front, a 25×16 mm rectangular seat is cast, about 3 mm deep, for the fence rod. A 5 mm adjusting screw (DIN 13/14, 1.25 pitch) is angled into the cast block.

The 9 mm iron (shaft 10×11 mm) has a cutting angle of ~47°. It’s mounted 10 mm away from the sole height, with inserted bearing sleeves and an 8 mm bronze nut. The wooden fence (17.5×1.9×1.9 cm) can be slid by 30 mm on two 3 mm slotted bolts in the wood. Two slotted round rods (62 mm long, 5 mm in diameter) with a fine DIN 08 thread and 11 mm bronze nuts clamp the fence in place.

Condition: Good. Although the plane’s appearance is somewhat strange.

Note: Comparison of this plane to examples of the Homewood Model A, B, C show some marked differences, one being that there is no inscription of the manufacturer name - amongst other anomalies. Origin and authenticity of this piece requires more scrutiny.
