One-Hand Plane
Extract from the operating instructions:We are pleased to offer you the practical and aesthetically pleasing one-hand plane with a precise adjustment system. You will enjoy working with this tool.
Tips for the one-hand plane
1) Setting the shaving thickness:
By turning the adjustment wheel to the right, you push the plane iron forward. While doing this, sight along the sole (to check alignment). Once the desired projection of the cutting edge past the sole is reached, ensure that the cutting edge sits parallel to the sole. If it is not parallel, adjust it by shifting the plane iron slightly to the right or left with your hand near the adjustment wheel.Select a shaving thickness between 0.1 and 0.3 mm. Do not set the plane iron too aggressively. Too heavy a cut results in high effort and a rough planed surface.
If you have set the plane iron too aggressively, retract it slightly by turning the adjustment wheel to the left, then re-advance it carefully by turning to the right.
2) Removing the plane iron:
Loosen the knurled screw of the cap. Swing the cap forward. You can now remove the plane iron from the body.3) Inserting the plane iron:
Place the lower hole of the iron over the pin on the sliding element. Swing the cap back over the screw heads until it stops. Tighten the knurled screw moderately. Set the desired shaving thickness.4) Sharpening the plane iron:
Sharpen the iron best on a wet grinding wheel to avoid overheating. (Special grinding machines for plane and chisel irons are available on the market.) The cutting edge should be 6.5–7 mm long and should not be hollow-ground or rounded. The burr produced during sharpening is removed using water or oil on a flat sharpening stone. Procedure: Place the reverse side of the cutting edge flat on the stone and move it back and forth. When removing the burr on the bevel side, do not lay the bevel perfectly flat—lift the cutting edge slightly. This creates a second, very narrow, barely visible bevel at the edge.
Repeat both procedures alternately until no burr can be felt on the cutting edge.
