Front plane (rabot de fond). The board is 2 cm thick at the front and 3 cm at the back. The front is straight with two oval cut-outs forming a four-finger grip. The top has two 1.2 cm and 1 cm holes for the screws holding the iron, with decorative shaping at the rear. On the underside there is a 12 × 2.5 cm recess used as a thumb grip. Both sides are rounded as palm rests. The bottom is flat with the iron and a 12 cm wide opening serving as the mouth.

How the cooper uses this plane: A roughly 90 cm long trapezoidal wooden frame stands with the wider part on the floor. At the front, 20 cm above the ground, it has a fixed crossbeam on which the cooper places the cask bottom. The narrow upper end rests under the cooper’s belly, held by his thighs. Planing is done from front to back, downward.

Iron: 197 × 20/43 mm, cutting edge 129 mm wide. At both ends of the cutting edge, 55 mm long 8 mm screws are welded on, with 17 mm hex screws and washers used as clamping hardware.
Cutting angle: ∠ 0°
