English Mitre Plane

This smoothing plane has a body and lever cap made of cast bronze, with the top edges rounded. The lever cap measures approximately 104 × 51 × 6.5 mm and includes a 15 mm-diameter cross curve for the screw fastening through the plane’s side walls. It has a rounded top and is secured by a 6 mm bronze screw (about 38 mm long) with a “Whitworth 55° 26 G” thread, featuring a 7 mm knurled head roughly 21 mm in diameter.

The rear section has a 43° angled seat for the iron, with a 51 × 20 mm groove about 7 mm deep in solid bronze. Near the front, there is a recess (about 113 × 52 × 58 mm) to accommodate the double iron, lever cap, and the chip-ejection opening. The side walls stand vertically but are curved lengthwise, and the sole is flat. The mouth is around 9 × 54 mm, located 52 mm from the front.

The iron is approximately 53 mm wide (2 1/16 in.), with an 11 mm bronze peg, about 8 mm high, at the top end of the blade. The cutting angle is around 43°. The markings read “W × P WARRANTED,” “W.P. WARD,” and “CAST STEEL.”
