Curved Profile Plane (sweep plane)

Body made from a single piece, 3.8 × 6.5 × 3.2 cm, with side handles 7 cm long, Ø 2–3 cm. Iron–wedge slot at top 1.3 × 3 cm. Shaving slot 1.4 × 2.4 cm with 0.3 cm side cheeks acting as wedge abutments. Mouth opening underneath 8 mm. Wooden wedge with rounded top.

Iron: 30 mm, profiled edge; cutting angle ∠ approx. 60°.

Condition: good; old repaired crack in the wood.

Usage:

Sweep planes are used for planing curved edges with radii from approx. 20 cm up to very large radii, both inside and outside curves, and for shaping the side surfaces or profiles of curved wooden parts, such as elegant table or chair legs.

They are suitable for anything curved — narrow faces, profiles, roundings, grooves, and drip-grooves. They are not suitable for flat, straight work.
